Materials Budget Redesign Workshop
Limited Capacity full

Effective collection management and funding advocacy require that academic library materials budgets reflect the complexity of their underlying acquisitions. In order to maintain and grow support for collections funding, libraries need to be able to: exercise sound fiscal control, clearly communicate how funds are being spent, and show the impact of inflation on future purchasing power.
In the digital era, traditional two-dimensional budget structures are no longer adequate. Instead, libraries need an expanded multi-dimensional structure that accounts for four critical aspects of acquisitions - material type, material format, acquisition mode, and discipline. This structure, created and implemented at the Claremont Colleges Library in 2012, provides transparency and visibility, supports long-term planning and ongoing spending control, and facilitates reporting and advocacy. In the five years since, it has evolved with the changing needs of the organization and the acquisitions environment, proving its adaptability and resilience.
This workshop will introduce new ways of thinking about budgeting for academic library acquisitions, control and monitoring of expenditures, and advocating for collection dollars. Participants will dig into the fundamentals of the faceted budget structure used at CCL, engage in practical exercises in reassigning existing expenditures from their own budget to the new facets, transform their own traditional budgets into the new structure, generate and analyze expenditure reports, and plan future allocations based on real expenditure data.

Open Education: Reducing Costs, Expanding Access, Improving Pedagogy
The cost of college textbooks has grown to a point that virtually every campus is now seeking solutions. While incremental progress has been made through stop-gap measures such as rental programs, course reserves, and digital licensing, the greatest potential lies in open educational resources (OER). OER are freely available academic materials that can be downloaded, edited, and shared to better serve all students. OER include all kinds of content such as textbooks, lesson plans, and assignments, and can include printed materials, not just digital. Institutions of all types have begun to leverage OER to reduce costs for students, expand access to high quality information resources, and enable faculty to explore new forms of pedagogy that promote deeper learning. This talk will cover background on the OER movement, major initiatives and trends, and success stories of how OER positively impacts students. It will also help frame the opportunity for library leadership and provide specific advice for members of the audience to take back to campus.

How to Thrive in the Era of Ubiquitous Open Access: Perspectives and Lessons from Unpaywall
This year, scholarship is reaching an access tipping point: in many fields, over 50% of content is available as Open Access. The era of OA advocacy is ending, and being replaced by an era of Ubiquitous OA. In the Ubiquitous OA era:
  • The majority of content is OA.
  • Readers expect access will be convenient and instant from anywhere--and they’re willing and able to get it illegally if needed.
  • It gets hard to create value in content delivery.
  • It gets easy to create value in content enhancement, building atop massive, newly-available OA corpora.
Therefore, smart money moves away from content delivery, and toward tools that help users find, digest, monitor, use, clarify, and connect content.
This session will discuss the problems and possibilities of Ubiquitous OA for academic libraries. We’ll come from the perspective of Unpaywall, a database tracking OA copies for 100 million scholarly articles. Unpaywall runs a browser extension used by 120,000 readers, and a database that’s used millions of times in thousands of academic libraries every day, via integrations into Web of Science, Dimensions, and most commercial link resolvers.
The session will discuss the lessons learned over the last year since Unpaywall’s launch. We’ll avoid OA cheerleading, and instead dig in to concrete, real-world lessons gleaned from from millions of Unpaywall users, unveiling insights gleaned from server logs, studies, and interviews. Attendees will leave with specific goals and techniques to flourish in tomorrow’s Ubiquitous OA era.

Lightning Talks: Innovations in SCELC Libraries
Gabriel Ortiz & Dave Bolinger, Claremont Colleges
Using SpringShare as the Canonical Data Source for Library Outreach and Communications
The Claremont Colleges Library UX team will discuss how to use SpringShare as a canonical source to manage vital library data. Recognizing that our library data exists on multiple sites, our solution keeps our data up-to-date without the need to manually update information in
each platform. Moreover, the outcome of this process has created more outreach access points for our resources and services. Through the use of various APIs, we have integrated staff rosters, libGuides, and other digital assets with our custom WordPress theme, and with our digital signage powered by FourWinds Interactive. Our discussion provide a brief overview of our conceptual framework, along with information on technical components for this solution.

Rice Majors, Santa Clara University
Weeding With Confidence, and Without Anxiety
Santa Clara University (SCU) Library has contracted with OCLC’s GreenGlass to provide collection assessment data to examine our print book collection, which had never been systematically weeded. GreenGlass is an automated collection analysis tool that offers libraries a way to measure and visualize collection attributes and filter results by multiple factors, such as date of publication, circulation, and language. At SCU, our focus was on evaluating our print monograph collection to implement a systematic, “rules-based” weeding project employing automated tools. The use of GreenGlass, which can specifically tailor collection data to agreed-upon parameters, allowed us to avoid one of the obstacles to weeding at SCU - the emotional connections to collections built over time. Historically, SCU library has had no large-scale or organized weeding of print monographs, and our aggregate collection age and redundancy reflected that lack of attention. Based on this need to weed, our research questions for this analysis focused on the use of the collection and how it serves not only our local users, but also our peer and consortial partner libraries. Our analysis needs were met with GreenGlass, since it contains a component for collection comparison to self-selected peer libraries. The results of our new collection analysis paved the way for an efficient and successful weeding project that is currently underway.

Gabriel Ortiz, Claremont Colleges
The Development of a Customizable Pre-Scoped Library Searchbox for LibGuides
The User Experience (UX) team will discuss the development of a fully customizable jQuery searchbox widget. This application outputs a pre-scoped OCLC WorldShare searchbox, enabling LibGuide creators to quickly embed a scoped searchbox that connects users from subject/course guides to relevant resources in library holdings. We will discuss features of the application, plans for implementation, in addition to key concepts to consider when building a similar application for other Library Discovery Searches.

Marie Kennedy, Loyola Marymount University
The Research Networks of Accomplished Librarian-Researchers
In our previous work we have observed the research networks of novice librarian-researchers. How do the networks of novice librarian-researchers compare to those of more experienced librarian-researchers? In this presentation we describe our research questions and methodology to be used to help us answer this question.

Adam Rosenkranz, Claremont Colleges
"The Umbrella Exercise" An Attempt to Cover the Basics and Still Make it All Interactive in First Year IL Instruction
This presentation will share an exercise used to introduce first year students to basic research skills for both the particular class and college career, as well as introduce them to to basic IL concepts with an emphasis on source evaluation. At the beginning of the class, the students are broken up into four or five groups. Each group has a task to find a particular information source. Each group then answers questions about the items they have found. The group exercises are one Google Doc which anyone with a link can access and edit, after which the class reconvenes to review discuss the group work. The questions are designed to lead to discussion to the basic concepts that the instructor wishes to cover. This brief presentation will quickly tour the exercise, talk about its evolution, and its generally positive results.

Five Key Lessons Learned in the First Year of a Multifaceted Institutional Repository Outreach and Marketing Program
Are you conducting outreach and marketing to increase users of your Institutional Repository?
Are you assessing your efforts to see what activities yield the best results? Santa Clara University Library's Scholarly Communication Working Group tried and assessed five approaches to increase faculty users of Scholar Commons, SCU’s Institutional Repository.
In this Lightning Round, we’ll share what we did, how well it worked, and what lessons will inform changes to our ongoing efforts.

Jessica Davila Greene, Claremont Colleges
Zotero and Latex, Recapturing that Magic Moment: Citation Management in an Undergraduate STEM Information Literacy Session
Zotero, open source citation management software, is introduced to undergraduates in information literacy sessions by librarians at the Claremont Colleges Library. Students’ reaction to Zotero’s ‘magic moment’, auto populating a bibliography in a Word document, is usually one
of awe and delight and results in the flow of serotonin for the teaching librarian. Quite the opposite can occur if the librarian is demonstrating Zotero to STEM students who use a Latex program (plain text editor and markup commands to apply formatting to the document) rather than a "what you see is what you get" word processor, such as Word, for their research writing. This presentation will discuss how a STEM librarian brought that Zotero ‘magic moment’ back by demonstrating how Zotero can work with Latex to a group of senior thesis Physics students.

Vendors vs Librarians Bowling Night
The SCELC Vendors vs. Librarians Bowling Tournament began early in the 21st century. Vague recollections from the participants are unable to pinpoint the exact year in which it began, and we suspect we are now the world's longest-running vendor vs. librarian sporting event... at least in our neighborhood, if not the greater universe. In 2016, librarians won the tournament for the first time ever!
So, we urge you to continue the tradition! The bowling alley is just up the street from LMU (and right next door from the Custom Hotel), so make sure to join us for free food, refreshments, and two hours of bowling fun.
Bowling is not mandatory---come hang out!

Come discover the new innovations from Clarivate Analytics. We have 2 sessions available:

10:00am and 10:50am.

Daphne and Jim will be discussing:

Why we are re-establishing the prestigious Institute for Scientific Information (ISI):
we’ll explain its focus regarding the development of existing and new bibliometric and analytical approaches, editorial excellence and fostering collaborations with partners and customers across the academic community.

A world of full-text
: five times the amount of linked full-text in the Web of Science than previously. We’ll review how the full-text linking is burnt into the Web of Science platform: links to gold, hybrid, green accepted, green published.

More content added, over 5000 journals
: scientific, social science, and humanities trends and developments beyond the high-impact literature through our new Emerging Sources Citation Index. We’ll discuss a) its value-add enhancing new ideas, regional coverage, locally-relevant publications, b) how it’s indexed vs our flagship indices, c) what this extra content means to the Library, researchers, faculty, publishers and funders.

Our Publons acquisition enhancing Peer Review
: why this enables a seamless synergy between reviewers and authors. A seamless effective peer review process increases the research momentum since authors are often reviewers and vice-versa.  Publons data and the prestigious Publons score adds an invaluable and measurable value to your Web of Science subscription in terms of publication evaluation, alternative metrics and journal evaluation. We will explore why Publons provides a safe environment that is rewarding for the reviewer, enables faster reviews and helps overcome the many peer reviews challenges of today.

Getting the Most out of Usage Statistics: RedLink's Library Dashboard
We know libraries spend a great deal of time gathering and analyzing usage data, a median of almost 100 hours.  We also know that while integrated library and eResources management systems help with resource provisioning, they are less useful for evaluating eResources for renewal.  As a result, the majority of libraries do this time-consuming analysis outside of these systems. RedLink's Library Dashboard provides a complete overview of journal, e-Book, and database usage and turnaway statistics to help with decision-making, helping you determine cost-per-article to help in budgeting and facilitating publisher / product-level usage analysis.

Tailoring the Experience: Customizations with EBSCO Discovery and Stacks
As more libraries implement EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), they are looking to craft an experience to best meet the needs of their unique users.  EDS offers this flexibility through the customization work of the Library Services Engineering team as well as through the EDS API which allows libraries to plug EDS into presentation layers like Blacklight, Encore, Stacks, and more.  This session will focus on recent and upcoming enhancements to EDS and the EDS API.  We will also look at how Stacks can provide a responsive-designed library web presence as well as integrate the EDS API for libraries without a web development team. Finally, we will share best practices for customizing EDS based on data gathered from our User Experience team.

From re-establishing ISI to a very substantial body of additional journals, to newly exposing 10 million links to full-text across all our collections and driving peer-review through our Publons acquisition.
Title:
From re-establishing ISI to a very substantial body of additional journals, to newly exposing 10 million links to full-text across all our collections and driving peer-review through our Publons acquisition.
Speakers:
Jim Padrino, Daphne Grecchi.
Description:
  1. Why we are re-establishing the prestigious Institute for Scientific Information (ISI): we’ll explain its focus regarding the development of existing and new bibliometric and analytical approaches, editorial excellence and fostering collaborations with partners and customers across the academic community.
  2. A world of full-text: five times the amount of linked full-text in the Web of Science than previously. We’ll review how the full-text linking is burnt into the Web of Science platform: links to gold, hybrid, green accepted, green published.
  3. More content added, over 5000 journals: scientific, social science, and humanities trends and developments beyond the high-impact literature through our new Emerging Sources Citation Index. We’ll discuss a) its value-add enhancing new ideas, regional coverage, locally-relevant publications, b) how it’s indexed vs our flagship indices, c) what this extra content means to the Library, researchers, faculty, publishers and funders.
  4. Our Publons acquisition enhancing Peer Review: why this enables a seamless synergy between reviewers and authors.

Open Access: Creating pathways to a sustainable future
Academic institutions are in a state of crisis over rising materials, ebook and textbook costs. Libraries are applying new Open Access content acquisition and publishing strategies to solve this problem. Measuring impact, creating cohesion and simplifying processes are important to keeping momentum behind this movement. BiblioBoard’s software is playing a role globally in catalyzing the long term sustainability of OA. Hear about some of our work:
  • Knowledge Unlatched has unlatched into Open Access monographs 550 books from over 55 publishers over the past 4 years. Learn how BiblioBoard’s partnership with Knowledge Unlatched to create a KU Cloud Library is streamlining both the delivery and impact measurement of these books.
  • Hear case studies from a two-year Jisc funded University of Liverpool pilot centered on local creation of OA classroom materials, student digital user experience and lowering student textbook costs. Liverpool partnered with BiblioBoard to easily create and integrate OA materials into the campus wide curriculum.
  • Hear how academic institutions are using BiblioBoard as a turnkey, “IR Light” to catalog and archive institutional content on a simple to use platform that excels at delivery of materials to end users. Institutions can publish fully OA and/or to authenticated users in a simple, elegant and modern way. See the type of analytics that can be generated to measure the impact of your IR materials.

The Library as a Force for Social, Intellectual, and Cultural Stimulation on Campus – Collections to Foster Debate
"Hosting talks by controversial speakers is hardly a new development in higher education. Nor are tumultuous student protests. This past year was different. In 2017 political divisiveness, fomented by a presidential administration seeking to divide people rather than unite them, contributed to campus unrest that spiraled out of control. It’s likely 2018 will be a year of struggle and uncertainty in higher education, both for academic libraries and in the broader scheme of things.”
-        Steven Bell, Associate University Librarian, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, current vice president/president-elect of ACRL
Acknowledging Steven’s statement above how can Academic librarians combat the trend of “diminished free speech” on campuses?
GALE looks forward to showcasing how resources like Opposing Viewpoints in Context, Global Issues in Context, and primary source collections like: Women’s Issues and Identities, LGBTQ History and Culture Since 1940 Part I and II, and the American Civil Liberties Union Papers Online provide an opportunity for libraries to engage students and faculty with collections that foster debate and stimulate diverse thinking.

Feeding a Start Up Culture on Campus – Tools to Foster Innovation
Colleges and universities are investing heavily in the development of their students’ entrepreneurial skills. While many students dream of starting the next Facebook® or Twitter® (both of which were started by students), universities are more focused on the pedagogical value of entrepreneurship as a set of skills that can be applied across professional environments and activities to supplement the students’ classroom experience. Universities are investing both in formal programs as well as in extra-curricular activities to channel students’ interest in solving global problems through entrepreneurship.  How can the library support this start up culture on campus?
 During this session we will:
  • Showcase key entrepreneurial collections available from GALE that collectively foster innovation on campuses and are approachable to both the non-business major and business major
  • Tour the unique capabilities of Gale Small Business Builder, DemographicsNow, and Small Business Resource Center.
